Abina and the Important Men

Abina and the Important Men

This is the story of a young enslaved African woman who escapes her master, flees to the Gold Coast and takes her master to court. Based on actual court transcripts and the eponymous graphic history that I authored with artist Liz Clarke, the films breathes life the experiences and emotions of Abina Mansah. The film, available for streaming through Kanopy™ and KweliTV™, was a selection of the International Images Film Festival for Women, Raindance Film Festival, Toronto Black Film Festival, New Zealand International Film Festival, and La Journée de l’Animation à Cannes. It won the Prize for Animation at the san Francisco Black Film Festival and Best Animated Feature at Animaze – Montreal International Animation Film Festival.
